ABOUT ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC WORKER

San Damiano Cross public domain image

St. Francis Catholic Worker was formed in 1979, in Washington D.C.. It is a Christian community rooted in Catholic tradition committed to serving people poor in spirit regardless of faith. It was founded and became part of the the larger Catholic Worker movement which Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day started in 1933. John and Polly Mahoney started their mission directing the community in 1981. Originally, the community served as a hospitality house for seminarians and homeless single adults, assisted with soup kitchens, and conducted spiritual retreats for the poor in Washington. The retreats are the foundation of the community's activities.

In 1993, the Community moved to its current location in Spotsylvania, Virginia. The beautiful 10 acre property became available through God's grace and has the facilities to enable retreats up to 12 participants at a time. It has beautiful grounds for prayer, a walkway through the woods to a stream, and a beautiful chapel. The Community is very blessed to have this.

It will always be our joy as a faith community to offer free directed spiritual retreats to our brothers and sisters poor in spirit. We will focus on the Fredericksburg, Virginia region. The largest growing region in the state situated between Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The region serves the needs of the city of Fredericksburg and the counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, and Orange.

We do not seek government or United Way funds, and members of the community do not receive salaries or stipends. Relying on the providence of God for our needs, we are supported through the generosity of all who are inspired by our lifestyle and work. We are a Catholic, private, non-profit community.
